First Impressions

I’ll be honest — when I first pulled up to Cabana Nicorici, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a simple mountain retreat. But this four-star property in the hills outside Cluj-Napoca completely changed my perspective on Romanian hospitality. The wooden facade and traditional architecture blend so naturally with the Carpathian landscape that you almost feel like you’re staying in a well-kept secret.

Location & Setting

You know what’s brilliant about this place? It’s technically in Cluj-Napoca, but you’re actually nestled in the Scrind-Frasinet area — basically in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly the point. The drive from the city center takes about 30 minutes through winding forest roads, and honestly, that journey becomes part of the experience. You’re surrounded by dense woods and rolling hills, with hiking trails literally starting from the property’s backyard.

The Accommodation

My room had this perfect rustic-modern balance — exposed wooden beams overhead, but with all the comfort you’d expect from a quality hotel. The beds are genuinely comfortable (not just saying that), and the bathrooms are surprisingly spacious. What I loved most was the large windows that frame the forest views — I mean, you wake up feeling like you’re in a nature documentary, but with proper heating and Wi-Fi.

Dining & Amenities

The on-site restaurant serves traditional Romanian dishes that actually taste homemade, not like they came from a hotel kitchen. Their ciorbă de burtă is probably the best I’ve had outside of Bucharest, and the staff genuinely seems proud of the local recipes they’re serving. There’s also this lovely terrace where you can eat breakfast while listening to birdsong — it sounds cheesy, but it really does make a difference to your morning routine.

Why Guests Love It

Look, if you’re the type who needs to be within walking distance of shops and bars, this isn’t your place. But if you want to disconnect without giving up comfort — and I mean really disconnect, because the forest setting naturally makes you put your phone down — Cabana Nicorici delivers something special. The 9.8 rating makes perfect sense when you experience how thoughtfully everything is maintained. It’s the kind of place where you book for two nights and end up wishing you’d planned for four.
