Here’s the thing about staying in Cluj-Napoca — you want to be close to the action without being right in the middle of the tourist chaos. Engels apartment nails this balance perfectly. The central square is literally a five-minute walk, but you’re tucked away enough that you won’t hear drunk students stumbling home at 3 AM. I mean, Cluj is a university city, so that’s actually saying something.

The trams run frequently from nearby, and honestly, I found myself walking most places anyway. The old town, with all its cafes and that gorgeous St. Michael’s Church, is close enough that you’ll probably end up there for your morning coffee without even planning it.

The Space Itself

The apartment feels more spacious than you’d expect from the photos — and I’ve learned to be skeptical of rental photos over the years. The kitchen is actually functional, not just decorative like some places I’ve stayed. I ended up cooking a few meals there, partly because Romanian groceries are ridiculously cheap, and partly because the local markets near the square have incredible produce.

Everything’s clean and well-maintained, which honestly surprised me given how affordable this place is. The WiFi works properly (tested it on multiple video calls), and there’s enough storage space that you won’t be living out of your suitcase the whole time.

What the Neighborhood Offers

Piața Ion Agârbiceanu isn’t just an address — it’s actually where a lot of locals hang out. There’s this little restaurant around the corner that serves the best mici I had during my entire stay in Romania, and the owner barely speaks English but somehow we managed to have great conversations anyway. That’s Cluj for you.

The area comes alive in the evenings, but not in an overwhelming way. You’ll see families with kids, students grabbing coffee, older folks playing chess — it feels like an actual neighborhood rather than a tourist bubble.

Why Guests Love It

Look, Engels apartment isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s a solid, comfortable base for exploring Cluj-Napoca, and the 9.5 rating makes sense when you consider the value. You’re getting a proper room (well, several rooms actually) in a prime location for way less than you’d pay for a decent hotel.

The real win here is that you’ll feel like you’re actually staying in Cluj rather than just visiting it. Plus, having your own space means you can grab some of that amazing Romanian wine from the shop downstairs and actually enjoy it without hotel markup prices. Sometimes the simple approach works best.

  the location was great for me because i traveled for some exams and it was close by. the room was very clean and nice. the air conditioning worked perfectly and the lights were amazing, something that I would to in my own home:). Overall everything was on point and cozy. 100% recommend and would book again

  Cozy, modern, practical and so welcoming, with everything we needed for a quite lengthy stay. They also have a restaurant on the ground floor with tasty dishes and a cheap and plentiful breakfast menu. And they're open late.

  What could be improved: The water from the shower can escape through the side, however there is a mop provided to help dry it up.
  We stayed for a while, and I feel like some supplies to clean the kitchen area could have helped us to keep the kitchen cleaner.
