Hotel Rao Overview
First Impressions
Hotel Rao sits on Strada Progresului in a quieter part of Cluj-Napoca, and honestly, that’s exactly what I was hoping for after a long day exploring Romania’s tech capital. The building itself is modest — this is a three-star property, so you won’t find marble lobbies or doormen in bow ties. But what struck me immediately was how clean and well-maintained everything felt, from the simple reception area to the hallways that actually smell fresh instead of that generic hotel carpet smell.
The Neighborhood
Progresului Street turned out to be one of those local finds that guidebooks don’t really mention. You’re about a 15-minute walk from the old town center, which means you can easily get to the main sights but you’re not dealing with tourist crowds right outside your window. There’s a small grocery store just down the street — super handy for grabbing snacks or bottled water. The area feels residential, so you get a real sense of how locals actually live in Cluj, not just the polished historic center version.
Room Experience
My room was compact but thoughtfully laid out, with enough space to spread out my stuff without feeling cramped. The bed was actually comfortable — not just “decent for the price” comfortable, but genuinely good sleep comfortable. What I appreciated most was the attention to practical details: proper reading lights, enough outlets for charging devices, and a bathroom that had been recently updated. The WiFi worked well throughout my stay, which matters when you’re trying to navigate a new city or catch up on work.
Daily Routine
Breakfast is served in a small dining area that feels more like someone’s home than a hotel restaurant. The selection isn’t huge, but everything I tried was fresh and locally sourced where possible. Romanian pastries, decent coffee, fresh fruit — honestly, it was better than some four-star hotel breakfasts I’ve had. The staff seemed to actually care about the food quality, not just getting it out on time. Parking is available on-site, which turned out to be a real blessing since Cluj’s city center can be tricky to navigate by car.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Hotel Rao won’t wow you with fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy interiors. But after staying here, I understand why it has an 8.5 rating. It’s the kind of place where everything just works — the shower has good water pressure, the air conditioning actually cools the room, and the staff knows their neighborhood well enough to give you real recommendations, not just the standard tourist spots. For the price point, you’re getting solid comfort and reliability in a city that can be surprisingly expensive. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Very nice place and good location
What could be improved: N/Aconvenient – Dinu from Romania – December 8, 2024 (8/10)
location is very good, room is clean and comfortable, everything works well.
What could be improved: Interaction between staff and client is poor, it gives the impression that staff is unhappy with their own situation. Our room was charged by booking.com. On arrival a gent acknowledged this, but on checking out another lady kept insisting that it was not paid. We almost had to prove payment by showing her the bank statement. She should have known better. Breakfast is not a great experience, but for the amount paid it was more than enough.Excellent value for money in Cluj – Paul from Romania – December 2, 2024 (10/10)
Location, friendliness of staff
What could be improved: –Exceptional – Daniela from Romania – July 23, 2024 (10/10)
The staff.
What could be improved: As it is mentioned, but I did not read carefully, no elevator. The rooms are not soundproof, you could hear everything happening in the hallway.Exceptional – Nicolae from United Kingdom – July 17, 2024 (10/10)
The rooms and the bathrooms r very big and comfortable. Plenty if space around you.
What could be improved: N/aClose to where I needed to be, in a neighborhood not close to noise and a quiet and wonderful place – Asnat from Israel – June 7, 2024 (10/10)
The room was clean all the time but next time I will book with a balcony which will be more wonderful. Good price! Breakfast was sufficient, but I would like to have more vegetables for someone who doesn't eat sausage of any kind in the morning. It was clean, and everything I wanted and asked for, the staff did and was extremely kind.
What could be improved: nothing every thing was good.I will go there again – Mihaela from Romania – April 8, 2024 (9/10)
The plants on the hall
What could be improved: breakfast: I miss the fruitsIf you have things to do in the area is a very good option! – Andreea from Romania – November 17, 2023 (7/10)
It was convenient close to the university where we had some work to do. It was quite modern, clean, open restaurant all day (which is good as they are not so many in the area), nice decorations and plants. They allowed us to checking earlier
What could be improved: In the weekend the breakfast starts from 8 (but during the week is from 7) and we couldn't take it one day – there was no option to change to have it in the day we arrived. There was a wedding in the weekend – at first floor we could hear it in the room – but could have been worse.
