First Impressions
When you first pull up to SunGarden Golf & Spa Resort, honestly, the setting takes your breath away. This five-star property sits in Poiana Cerbului, about 20 minutes from Cluj-Napoca’s center, and it feels like you’ve discovered some well-kept secret. The modern architecture blends surprisingly well with the rolling hills around it — I mean, you’re literally surrounded by forest and fairways.
The Golf Experience
The 18-hole championship course is what really sets this place apart from other luxury resorts in Romania. It’s challenging enough to keep serious golfers happy, but honestly, even if you’re just okay at golf (like me), the views alone make it worth playing. The course winds through natural terrain, and on clear days you can see the Apuseni Mountains in the distance. What I actually love is that they don’t rush you here — you can take your time and really enjoy the experience.
Rooms and Amenities
My room had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the golf course, and the beds are seriously comfortable — that high-thread-count linen situation that makes you want to sleep in. The marble bathrooms are spacious, though honestly, you’ll probably spend more time at the spa anyway. They’ve got this indoor pool that connects to an outdoor section, plus a full wellness center that actually lives up to the hype. The treatments use local ingredients, which is a nice touch.
Dining and Social Spaces
The main restaurant does this interesting mix of Romanian classics and international cuisine — their ciorbă de burtă is actually excellent if you’re feeling adventurous. Breakfast spreads are generous without being overwhelming, and they make a proper cappuccino. There’s also a terrace bar where you’ll find yourself lingering longer than planned, especially during sunset when the whole valley lights up. The service throughout is attentive but never intrusive, which I really appreciate.
Why Guests Love It
What makes SunGarden special is how it manages to feel both luxurious and genuinely relaxing. You’re close enough to Cluj-Napoca for day trips — the city has some fantastic museums and that beautiful old town — but far enough away that you actually disconnect. The parking is ample and free, which might sound minor but it’s one less thing to worry about. Plus, the staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there, which always makes a difference in how your stay feels.
The concierge service in Cluj-Napoca arranges private castle tours, sommelier-led wine tastings, and helicopter hops to Turda Salt Mine reserves.
