First Impressions

Vila Vidalis sits on Strada Republicii in the heart of Cluj-Napoca, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior — it’s tucked between other buildings on this busy street. But step inside and you realize this three-star place has some real character. The reception area feels warm and personal, more like staying at a well-appointed friend’s place than a typical hotel.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re literally in the thick of things on Republicii Street, which means you can walk to most of Cluj’s main attractions without breaking a sweat. The old town is right there, and I mean right there — maybe a three-minute stroll to the main square. You know what’s even better? The street has this great mix of local shops and cafés that actually cater to residents, not just tourists, so you get a real feel for the city.

The Room Experience

My room was bigger than I expected, which seems to be a theme with Vila Vidalis — everything’s just a bit better than you think it’ll be. The furnishings aren’t fancy, but they’re thoughtfully chosen and everything works properly (which, let me tell you, isn’t always a given). The bathroom was spotless and had good water pressure, plus there’s decent Wi-Fi throughout the building.

Dining & Amenities

There isn’t a full restaurant on-site, but they do serve breakfast in a cozy dining area that overlooks the street. It’s simple stuff — fresh bread, local cheeses, decent coffee — but it’s exactly what you need to start your day exploring Cluj. The staff actually knows the neighborhood well and gave me some great recommendations for dinner spots that I never would have found otherwise.

Why Guests Love It

Vila Vidalis works because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s a solid, comfortable base in an unbeatable location, run by people who clearly care about their guests having a good experience. For the price point, you’re getting way more value than you’d find at the chain hotels on the outskirts of town. Plus, there’s something nice about staying somewhere that feels authentically Cluj rather than generic European hotel.

Cluj-Napoca hotels keep travelers close to cycling paths, botanical gardens, and tram lines to hidden fortresses.

  Great location for exploring Cluj Old Town. Friendly staff, clean room, comfy bed, good shower, parking – although the car park is small and tight if it's full, at least it has got its own private off street parking and they let me leave the car there for the rest of the day after I'd checked out for a small charge. Great value for money.

  Pros:
  1) by far the best price in town, at only about $40/day; nothing as decent comes even close to this offer in Cluj;
  2) central location, just 5 minutes of walking away from Unirii Square;
  3) flexible check-in/check-out time and without any human interaction necessary;
  4) good communication by phone and messages; once I forgot my acces card in the room and they quickly provided me the passcodes to get back inside;
  5) nice shower and bathroom in general;
  
  What could be improved: Cons:
  1) on booking.com they say they provide a fridge/minibar and wi-fi internet but in fact they don’t; luckly it was winter and I was able to preserve my food by just letting it outside the window; and luckly I was able to rely on my Vodafone unlimited mobile internet subscription; maybe it would’ve been too much at this price, but I just wish I knew from the start and not being lied to;
  2) the bed was not very comfortable; a better mattress and pillow would be a good investment, because sleeping is the most important thing for the clients of any hotel;
  3) the window was not sound proof and I was able to hear each and every car passing by the nearby street; they did not install it properly; I was able to block the noise by pushing it, but couldn’t find a way to keep it pushed without my continuous effort.
