First Impressions

Walking up to Royal 5* mansion near central square on Strada Clinicilor, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name — it sounds almost too grand, you know? But stepping inside, I get it now. This four-star place really does feel like staying in someone’s beautifully restored mansion, with those high ceilings and original hardwood floors that creak just enough to remind you of the building’s history.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about this spot in Cluj-Napoca — you’re actually tucked away on a quieter residential street, but the central square is maybe a seven-minute walk. I mean, you can grab your morning coffee and be people-watching in Piața Unirii before most tourists even wake up. The neighborhood has this authentic Romanian feel, with local bakeries and small shops that aren’t trying to sell you overpriced souvenirs.

The Room Experience

My room had these massive windows that flood everything with natural light during the day. The furnishings strike this nice balance — not overly fancy, but definitely a step up from your typical hotel setup. What really impressed me was the attention to detail, like the locally-made textiles and the way they’ve kept some of the original architectural features. The bathroom’s modern but doesn’t feel out of place with the rest of the mansion’s character.

Dining & Amenities

The breakfast situation is actually pretty solid — they serve it in what used to be the mansion’s dining room, complete with this gorgeous chandelier. It’s not a huge spread, but everything’s fresh and there’s a good mix of Romanian specialties alongside the usual continental options. There’s also a small restaurant area where you can grab dinner if you don’t feel like venturing out, though honestly, you’re missing out if you don’t explore the local food scene.

Why Guests Love It

Look, this isn’t going to be the flashiest place you’ll ever stay, but that’s sort of the point. The staff treats you like you’re visiting a friend’s home rather than just another tourist passing through. With an 8.7 rating, it’s clear other travelers appreciate this approach too. You get that boutique hotel experience without the boutique hotel price tag, and in a city like Cluj-Napoca where authentic character is becoming harder to find, that actually means something.
